Emack & Bolio's Say "NO" to the genetic hormone bST
The FDA has approved the use of a genetically induced hormone (Bovine Somatotropin) or bST to help cows produce more milk. Emack & Bolio's is strongly opposed to the use of the genetic hormone bST. These are the reasons why we oppose the use of synthetic bST.
More Antibiotics in Milk: bST will increase the rate of udder infections in cows. Increased antibiotics in milk decreases the effect of antibiotics when needed to be ingested by humans.
Uncertain Health Risks: bST produces a 25-36% increase in the concentration of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in milk. When ingested, high levels of IGF-1 can cause glucose intolerance and hypertension.
Higher Taxes, Fewer Farmers: There have been national surpluses of milk in every year. Just two years of a 10% increase in milk production from farmer's use of bST would most likely force the federal government to spend an extra $1.7 billion in mandatory price supports; most importantly, it would most likely force small dairy farmers out of business.
